So does size matter for dosing, or not?
Here’s where I land, and where I’ll name the tension honestly: the trial data mostly used flat doses regardless of dog size, which is a real counterargument to weight-based dosing. But flat dosing in a controlled 8-to-12-week study isn’t the same question as what a label should tell a 10 lb dog’s owner versus a 90 lb dog’s owner every single day, indefinitely. If a product only offers one CFU count for “all dogs,” ask what body-weight range that number was designed around, and don’t assume it was your dog’s.

What I actually watch for on a label
I’m less interested in the raw CFU figure than in whether the label tells me the strain (not just the genus — “Lactobacillus” alone means little; “Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus” is a strain I can look up), whether the count is guaranteed through expiration, and whether the manufacturer participates in third-party testing. What actually helped was switching to a product formulated with a weight-tiered dose and pairing it with a diet trial, because in my experience the GI substrate the probiotic has to work with — fiber type, fat level, protein source — moves the needle at least as much as the organism count does.
